Educational Session Two: 1:15 to 2:15 pm

Two A: Google-ize your Toastmaster Club

Presenter: Chas Moore CC, ALB Area 39 Governor (09-10), Past President Kelowna AM Toastmasters

Program Description: Is communication to your club members cumbersome?  Is your website up-to-date and easy to maintain?  Is maintaining your meeting agenda’s easy?  Is it simple to share workload between executive members?

If you have wondered if there was a way to improve upon any of the areas identified in the above questions, then this is the session for you.

Chas was frustrated with his club's poor logistics.  They had an out-of-date webpage that could not be updated.  Individuals maintained their own e-mail distribution lists, resulting in members missing e-mails and former members continuing to receive e-mails.  A lack of bookkeeping was not obvious until the year-end turnover of Treasurer's position.  He used Google free services to update all of his club's logistics.  It was the first time he had created a website or club infrastructure.  Now he has done so for three organizations.

Chas' presentation will demonstrate how you can use Google’s free services to manage your club’s logistics, communication & website.  Google’s services are basic, but this means that anyonecan use them and maintain them.  If you can use Microsoft Office products, you can create a webpage and manage your clubs logistics (or get someone else to help out).

By attending this session you learn how to use (1) Google Groups, (2) Google Docs and (3) Google Sites.

Bio: Chas has worked as an instructor of adult learners at Camosun College in Victoria, BC.  He currently facilitates Organizational Development Leadership courses at Interior Health (two day courses, on teamwork, conflict management, facilitation, communication, etc).

Two B: Coaching for success: How to get people to do what needs to be done (and enjoy it): Avoid lame excuses, procrastination and downright stubbornness.

Presenter: Rob St. Onge CC, ALB   President of Kelowna AM Toastmasters (09-10), Past VP Education

Program Description: An employee is continually late with weekly reports. Your son is not doing his chores to the best of his ability. The Vice President of Membership of your Toastmaster Club has not been mailing new member applications to World Headquarters, so the new members have not been receiving the Toastmaster Magazines or New Member Kits. For whatever reason, the work that needs to be done is not being done, or it is not being done to your satisfaction. If you want it done and done properly, you need to coach or counsel the people responsible for doing the work.

This session will review:

  • The reasons your charges are underperforming.
  • How to engage your charge in working on a solution to garner better results.
  • Ensure the “change in behavior” is long-lasting and meets your needs.

We will use an interactive role-playing exercise to practice the skills learned in this session. Upon completion of this session, you will have the skills and confidence to tackle those challenging situations where your expectations of others continually comes up short. You may also discover where others have been clumsily trying to get you to deliver at a higher level.

Bio: In 2009, the construction market ground to a halt. As the sales manager for a contracting company, Rob was challenged with finding enough work to keep their doors open and staff employed. This required a focused effort on 2 fronts:

1. Securing what little traditional work was available - which meant pushing his sales force to get creative, resourceful and very determined.

2. Finding new products and services to offer their existing clients - which meant engineering new offerings, requiring the input and collaboration of most of their employees.

Having clear objectives and making sure that everyone was meeting what was required of them was critical to their company's success. They have awoken in 2010 with a more organized, effective business with a stable work-force … all excited about working together on a promising future. The content of this session is now the basis of their office performance review program.
